Anne Bonny

In March 1702, a servant woman named Mary Brennan gave birth to a daughter named Anne; the father was Mary’s employer and lover William Cormac. As his work in the legal profession provided a decent wage, the family lived well, yet William felt unsatisfied in his role, and wanted to face new challenges; he therefore decided to take Mary and Anne with him to the New World.

Anne was still a small girl when she arrived in North America, and what should have been an exciting new adventure had a tragic turn at an early stage; Mary, Anne’s mother, died far too young. Beset by grief, William did not have the motivation he had shown back in Ireland, and failed to become a successful attorney. In addition to this, he proved to be a poor father, not spending fair time with his daughter. Without a strong but loving female role model in her life, Anne grew up with a very short temper, and one account even tells us of how she stabbed one of her servants with a table knife after a minor disagreement.

As the years progressed, William overcame his grief for Mary (outwardly at least), and built up a successful business as a merchant. The time would soon come for him to find Anne a suitable husband, and - as his only child - perhaps the two could eventually take over the family business. As she had grown older, Anne was said to have become ‘quite a catch’, yet it is thought that her temper put off many a suitor; in addition to this, one of course could not expect such a wild-child to settle for a husband of a dull nature such as a businessman or professional. And so, as things turned out, the fiery redhead fell in love with James Bonny, a sailor and small-time pirate with no wealth of his own.

Despite her father’s pleas for Anne to end the romance which he considered ‘beneath her’, she continued seeing James, and William soon disowned her. It is said that in retaliation for this, she burned down his plantation (although this fact is disputed) before the two ran away together to Providence Island, a known hive of pirate activity. Anne began to hang around in the local taverns, getting friendly with the menfolk, many a great deal more successful - and interesting - than James.

One such man that Anne met was a well-known pirate called Jack Rackham, better known to some as ‘Calico Jack’. Although Jack himself is not featured in this list of the greatest ever pirates (for reasons that should become clear later in Anne’s story) he is credited with displaying perhaps the most familiar pirate flag (or Jolly Roger ) recognised today - a smiling skull positioned above two curved cutlasses. Jack and Anne began an affair, and had a child together - although it is believed they simply abandoned the baby, not wanting the responsibility or burden of bringing up such a youngster. On
